Decorating!
The official definition of Decorating is the following:
“make (something) look more attractive by adding extra items or images to it.”
Interior Design and Decorating go hand in hand when it comes to finishing off a space. It’s almost like “the icing on the cake” and “jewelry with an outfit”. Without the decorating, the design of a space just doesn’t look complete. Decorating can greatly enhance the aesthetic and ambiance of any space! Decorative items not only make a space feel more inviting and comfortable, but the overall look can express someone’s personal style and personality.
There are many ways to add decorative items that end up making a large impact on the overall design of a space. Read my favorite pieces to incorporate into any design project! Or book a complimentary design consultation by clicking here.
Pillows: Plush and comfortable pillows add both a functional and decorative purpose in Interior Design. Pillows are an inexpensive way to add color, texture, and pattern into a space. You can also change the pillows out from time to time to give the space a brand new look and feel! Pillows are a great way to show off a snippet of your personal style. Be sure to stay in scale and proportion when choosing pillows to the object the pillow is sitting on so it does not compromise the design of the space.
Area Rugs: The size and placement of an area rug plays a significant role in Interior Design. An area rug can be a focal point with a lot of color, or it can be a subtle addition to the room bringing in warmth and texture to the space. Rugs also designate a “zone” between other spaces in an open floor plan. For example, in a living room a rug has to be large enough for the front legs of a couch to rest on if pairing the rug with a coffee table, end table, and chairs.
Plants: Besides approving air quality, plants can add an element of natural beauty and tranquility to a space. Just like pillows and rugs, plants add texture and color to a room and can even serve as a focal point. Depending on the size, plants can serve as a partition in an open floor plan. Vertical gardens and terrariums are having a moment in Interior Design spaces, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
Lighting: Besides actually serving its purpose (lighting up the room), lighting is such a crucial element when it comes to designing a space. There are actually several different layers, categories, and functions of lighting: Natural Lighting, Ambient Lighting, Task Lighting, Accent Lighting, Lamps, Candles, and more!
Accessories: Besides the items listed above, there are even more items that truly enhance a design and give a space that designer touch that families/guests enjoy for years to come. Again, personalization and creativity can come through in accessories but can also serve as functional pieces that double as color, texture, and warmth. Some accessories I like to include in designs are artwork pieces, mirrors, draperies, throws, clocks, trays, baskets, and tabletop decor.
Decorating is the best way to show off creativity when it comes to all of my projects I have completed. I love finding items that clients already have and repurposing them to help save on cost.
