5 Ways to Freshen Up Your Space for 2024!

And just like that, it’s 2024! Personally, I love starting over and mentally giving myself permission to do so. 2023 was such an amazing year for me and starting Design With Missy has really made me check in with how I want to grow personally as a mom, a wife, and of course as an Interior Designer. I had a lot of projects come to fruition in 2023, I learned a lot from mistakes, and I cherished the moments that made me cry with happiness. After finally completing projects I’ve been working on for MONTHS, and seeing all the hard work and time that went into them, I know I’m exactly where I need to be. With that, 2024, I welcome you with open arms! I know this year is going to ROCK, and if you are like me, I’m looking for ways to make my home match my outlook for 2024. “Fresh” and “New” are words that come to mind. That’s why this month’s blog is focused on ways to change out items in your home without breaking the budget. A little goes a long way! Happy New Year everyone, and thank you for your support and business in 2023!

Here are some questions I have been asked being in this business. I have a lot of clients that already have high quality furniture, good “bones”, and interesting accessories to use in their space but they get stuck on how to space plan their furniture and use existing items to make their rooms look amazing. Have you ever asked yourself these questions below?

  • How can I make my room look better without buying anything?

  • How can I upgrade my space on a budget?

  • How can I make my room look beautiful?

  • How can I decorate with simple things I already have?

If so, a “Decorator for the day” may be all you need to help revamp your space for 2024. This could mean revamping your current design style or redesigning an existing space to make it look different but not spending a lot of money to do so. I’m all about “recycling” existing items I find in your home and redo an entire space with what you already have! This not only saves the planet, but it will save you money by only purchasing things you may actually need. Read on to discover 5 ways to spruce up your home!

MY TOP FIVE WAYS
To FRESHEN
YOUR
SPACE
FOR 2024!

Change up your furniture layout

Space planning is my passion, and it's one that I can accomplish quickly and with ease. Having worked as an Interior Designer, I have learned to follow certain "rules" when creating a room layout using existing furniture. My approach always prioritizes functionality to ensure smooth traffic flow and practical use of the pieces in the room. I also consider ways in which furniture can be used to anchor artwork on walls and to facilitate conversation flow during entertaining. The room's architecture is also taken into account, including the placement of windows, lighting and HVAC, and electrical outlets. While I can usually visualize the ideal furniture placement upon entering a room, using design software like AutoCAD allows for even more precision when it comes to the inch-perfect placement of items, tailored to you and your family's needs. Add some peel and stick wallpaper

Revamp Your Space in Minutes with Peel and Stick Wallpaper! Give your space a quick makeover with the help of removable wallpaper! Whether it's one accent wall or an entire bathroom like I did here, I always try to include this versatile design element in my projects. Because it's removable, you can switch it up whenever you please! Renters, take note – this is the perfect solution for adding your personal touch to your space while still adhering to the rules. The best budget friendly peel and stick wallpaper can be found on Amazon, Spoonflower, or Wayfair. I have my top pick on Amazon (shown below) that can relate to the 2024 Pantone Color of the year Peach Fuzz!

Update your artwork or add a mirror

A simple yet effective method to breathe new life into your living quarters is by switching up your hanging décor. While the artwork on your walls can make a big impact, staring at the same painting day in and day out can become tiresome. Consider finding new decor from various sources such as online retailers, thrift stores, or even your favorite artist's collection (check out my top pick below from Amazon). You can also make prints from an original painting you have made yourself. If you're not ready to part with your current pieces, store them safely for future use so that you have an inventory to choose from based on the time of year or whenever inspiration strikes. This small change can make a huge difference regardless of whether you rent or own your home. Additionally, incorporating reflective surfaces, whether hanging or standing, can create the illusion of more space and open up a room. This complements the role of lighting, and mirrors are a perfect way to combine both functionality and decor. Experiment with different mirror styles that match the current look of the room and play around with the placement to achieve the desired effect!

Add some greenery

Enhance Your Home Decor on a Budget with Greenery. Looking to spruce up your living space without breaking the bank? Try incorporating plants into your decor! Adding greenery can completely transform a room and provide fresh air too. With a variety of options to choose from, plants can offer a modern or traditional touch when placed in a stylish container. Whether you prefer big or small plants, they can be displayed on shelves or on the floor to suit your needs. As an interior design enthusiast, I highly recommend adding some greenery to your home for an inexpensive yet stunning makeover.

Add some pillows

When it comes to furnishing your home or office, throw pillows can make all the difference. The number of pillows you use and how you arrange them depends on the size, shape, pattern, and scale of your furniture. As an interior designer, I enjoy using a mix of patterns and colors to create interest. To start, consider the scale of your furniture and pillows, making sure that they complement each other. Then, experiment with mixing large scale patterns with small pattern repeats. You could even enhance the look by adding a soft, cozy blanket underneath a grouping of pillows on a sectional. While styling a sectional can be tricky, your style and taste will ultimately guide your choices. For a modern or minimalist look, use just a couple of pillows at each corner. If you prefer a more traditional or maximalist approach, arrange a row of pillows on a deep seating sectional using various colors and patterns. Here are my top picks of groupings on Amazon!
